UV Coating: Fast Choices, Fast Results

Gloss, matte, or spot UV? Each finish looks and feels different. Here is which one works for your deadline.

What UV Coating Does — and Why It Matters on a Rush Order

UV coating is a clear protective layer applied to your printed piece and cured instantly with ultraviolet light. It protects against fingerprints, scuffing, and light moisture. It also changes how colors appear — either amplifying them (gloss) or softening them (matte).

For prints that need to look sharp after being handled, stacked, transported, and displayed, coating is not optional — it is essential. An uncoated flyer picks up fingerprints and scuff marks from the first touch. A coated piece still looks clean after being carried in a bag, pinned to a board, or shuffled through a stack.

On rush orders, gloss and matte UV are applied inline with no additional production time. Spot UV requires an extra day. Know the difference before you choose.

Gloss UV: Zero Added Time, Maximum Pop

Gloss UV gives your piece a smooth, reflective surface that makes colors more vivid and images sharper. It is the most popular coating for marketing materials because it makes everything look polished and professional.

The critical advantage for rush orders: gloss UV adds zero production time. It is applied inline during the standard printing process. Choosing gloss UV does not push your delivery date by even a single hour.

Use gloss for: event flyers, promotional pieces, direct mail, and any design with bold imagery and saturated colors. The reflective surface amplifies your strongest visual elements.

On many products, gloss UV is included in the base price. There is no reason to skip it — it is free protection and free color enhancement.

Matte UV: Zero Added Time, Sophisticated Feel

Matte UV provides the same protection as gloss with a flat, non-reflective surface. Colors appear slightly softer, and the overall look is more understated. The feel is smooth and velvety — noticeably different from the slick surface of gloss.

Like gloss, matte UV adds zero production time on rush orders. It runs inline with standard printing. Same delivery date, different aesthetic.

Use matte for: text-heavy materials, professional services collateral, programs, newsletters, and any piece where readability matters more than visual flash. Matte eliminates the glare that makes glossy pieces hard to read under overhead lights. It also hides fingerprints better than gloss on dark backgrounds.

Matte UV is typically the same price as gloss. The choice is purely aesthetic. If you are not sure, go with gloss. If your piece is text-heavy or your brand is more refined than flashy, go with matte.

Spot UV: One Extra Day, Maximum Impact

Spot UV applies high-gloss coating to specific design elements — a logo, a headline, an image — while the rest stays matte. The glossy areas are raised and reflective. The contrast between coated and uncoated surfaces creates a tactile dimension that draws attention and invites touch.

The timeline truth: spot UV adds one business day to production. It requires a separate coating pass with a custom mask aligned to your design. This is a physical process constraint that cannot be compressed.

If your deadline allows the extra day, spot UV is the most impactful finish available. If your deadline does not allow it, gloss or matte UV delivers excellent results with zero time penalty.

Spot UV requires a mask file — a separate PDF with the coated areas filled in solid black. See our spot UV printing guide for setup details.

Quick Decision Guide

Tightest possible deadline: gloss or matte UV. Zero production time added. Both protect your piece and enhance the visual quality. Pick based on whether you want shine (gloss) or subtlety (matte).

One extra day available: spot UV on a matte base. The premium finish that makes your piece the one people pick up, keep, and remember. Worth the extra day when your printed piece needs to make a lasting impression.

No coating: only when the recipient needs to write on the piece — sign-up forms, feedback cards, RSVP inserts. Uncoated paper accepts pen and pencil.

For rush orders where you are unsure, default to gloss UV. It is the safest, fastest, and most universally effective choice.
